Getting Started at ROOTS BJJ
×
I have no martial arts experience, can I still start training BJJ?
Yes, of course! The classes are suitable for all levels from novice through to black-belt. We have a structured curriculum that will ensure that you develop the correct techniques and a sound understanding of BJJ as a martial art. We also offer beginners classes at many of our gyms.
What should I bring to class?
For your first class, wear comfortable clothing and bring a bottle of water for after training. Gym and yoga clothes are suitable. It is best to wear shorts without pockets. Please remove jewellery, such as watches, rings and necklaces. Long hair must be tied back. We do not wear shoes on the mats. You can purchase a Gi (top and trousers) from your instructor.
Do I need a mouth-guard?
We encourage adults to wear mouth-guards to training. We recommend a boxing style mouth-guard for your top teeth. Stores, such as Rebel Sport, stock mouth-guards.
Can I do private classes if I don’t want to do group glasses?
Private classes are the best way to develop your techniques. They are suitable for students of all levels.
Do I have to compete?
No, you can progress through the BJJ grading system (belts) without ever competing. However, if you would like to compete, the Roots BJJ team will help you to prepare for competitions.
Can kids do BJJ?
Yes, of course! ROOTS BJJ has an extensive training program for children and teens. We also actively compete in local and state competitions. The ROOTS BJJ curriculum features an appropriate level of contact for your child's physical development and maturity so that they learn safely and effectively. BJJ will help your child to develop discipline, respect, honour, leadership, coordination, strength, and self-confidence while making friends and having fun.
Can women do BJJ?
Definitely! BJJ is a great way to build strength and coordination. It is also good to learn self-defence.
When is a good time to start?
BJJ is a martial art. We train all year round. There are no terms. So if you want to come and do a free trial class, simply contact the gym that you want to try and we can arrange a trial for you
